This twenty-sixth installment continues our series on HeinOnline’s digital collections.
HeinOnline’s Treaties and Agreements Library provides a comprehensive collection of United States treaties, including expired treaties, those still in force, and those yet to be officially published. The collection contains the United States’ official treaty publications, United States Treaties and Other International Agreements (UST) and Treaties and Other International Acts Series (TIAS), as well as several unofficial treaty publications.
To help begin the research process, the collection includes Treaties in Force (TIF), which has been published annually by the Department of State since 1955 and includes brief summaries of all treaties and international agreements which are considered to be in force as of January of the year of publication. Igor I. Kavass’ Guide to Treaties in Force, designed to be used in conjunction with TIF, is also included to facilitate searching.
One additional (and very useful) feature provided by this resource is a quick and easy way to determine if a treaty to which the United States is a party is still in force. Simply click on “Treaty Metadata Search” under the “Search” tab and fill in the fields to search. The Summary that is included with each result will include a brief description of the agreement, as well as whether or not it is still in force. The Treaties and Agreements Library also includes links to several external resources that will be helpful to those doing research on the topic.
