Great Resources: HeinOnline – National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws

This fortieth installment continues our series on HeinOnline’s digital collections.

heinonline-logoSince 1892 the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws (NCCUSL) has researched, studied, and reviewed state law in order to identify critical areas of state statutory law where uniformity is desirable between states to promote clarity and stability.  The NCCUSL is comprised of practicing lawyers, judges, legislators and legislative staff, and law professors appointed by state governments (as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands) to research, draft and promote enactment of uniform state laws in areas of state law where uniformity is desirable and practical.  To date, the NCCUSL is responsible for more than 250 uniform acts, in diverse subject areas such as commercial law, real estate, arbitration, deceptive trade practices, franchise and business opportunities, healthcare, limited liability, to name just a few.  Some of the more widely adopted acts promulgated by the NCCUSL include the Uniform Probate Code, Uniform Trust Code, and Uniform Family Support Act.

With the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws Library, available through HeinOnline, you can access and search the full text of all Model Acts drafted, recommended, or endorsed by the NCCUSL.  The library provides access to NCCUSL Archive Publications, which includes all available transcripts of each annual meeting, as well as each successive draft of each piece of model legislation.  These resources help serve as a legislative history of sorts, to help researchers understand the development of, as well as the logic and reasoning behind, these uniform laws.  The library also includes access to numerous other related works.
