Legal News of the Day: DoJ to Stop Enforcing Law Denying Benefits to Same-Sex Spouses

DojOn Wednesday, the U.S. Department of Justice announced it will cease to enforce a federal law denying veteran benefits to same-sex spouses.  According to a letter from Attorney General Eric Holder to Congress, it will not enforce the provision defining a spouse as a person of the opposite sex because it is identical to Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act, which was struck down by the Supreme Court in June.

This follows last month’s news that the Department of Defense would extend benefits to same-sex couples.
